Pregnancy Running Workouts – Weeks 29 & 30

There wasn’t a ton of running these past two weeks. Craig was gone hunting for a week, I was busy working on the baby’s room and redecorating our house, I wasn’t sleeping very much, and frankly just not making running a priority.

I’m fine with it. If anything I would rather go through pregnancy running less mileage than burning out or injuring myself. (Although, I’m not sure I’ve heard of anyone getting injured during their pregnancy?? I’m sure it is possible, but then again it would be hard to know if it was a running-related injury or something from the pregnancy itself.) This is about how much I was running during Cullen’s pregnancy and postpartum running went better than I expected, so I’m hoping it will be the same this time around.

Week 29 of pregnancy – August 5 – 11

Monday4 miles | easy run | 9:17 average pace
The cramping/tightening of my abdomen has begun. It is still better than all the pain/discomfort I had with Cullen, but every week seems to get a little tougher.

Tuesdayoff

Wednesday3 mile run/walk |11:36 average pace
Sometimes I will stop my watch during my walk/rest breaks, but sometimes it is also nice to not feel pressure to run the entire distance I want to cover. I would say about 75% of this distance was running and 25% was walking.

Thursday7 miles | ladder workout: 200, 400, 600, 800, 600, 400, 200 meters
I am still trying to do a hard workout most weeks–it doesn’t always happen, but it did this week. I did a very similar workout when I was pregnant with Cullen at this point in him pregnancy, so I wanted to try it again.

Splits:
200 – 0:44 (5:54 pace)
400 – 1:38 (6:34 pace)
600 – 2:27 (6:34 pace)
800 – 3:24 (6:50 pace)
600 – 2:26 (6:31 pace)
400 – 1:34 (6:18 pace)
200 – 0:45 (6:02 pace)

I was happy with how this went. I was glad my pace did actually vary appropriately for each distance (except the first 400 and 600), and I was glad that I can still have consistent splits even when I’m pregnant.

Fridayoff
Craig left for his hunting trip for a week, so it was tricky to get runs in. I could have hired a babysitter or pushed Cullen in the stroller, but I was so busy doing other things that running just took a backseat during this time. Now if I was training for something, then I definitely would have made the runs happen–it’s all about priorities!

Saturdayoff

Sundayoff

Total for the week: 14 miles

Week 30 of pregnancy – August 12 – 18

Mondayoff

Tuesday6 miles | easy run | 8:48 average pace
Cullen was back in preschool this day, so I was able to get a run in since Craig was still gone hunting. I felt exceptionally good (for pregnant running) during this run, but it was probably due to taking four days off in a row.

Wednesday5 miles | tempo workout
I did this workout with the training group. I think having the shorter interval/time goals helps me feel “better” and a goal to focus on.

Tempo workout paces:
2 x 5 minutes @ tempo (7:27, 7:13)
20 minutes easy
10 minutes @ tempo (7:32)

Thursday2 miles | easy | 10:00 pace
This was much harder than it should have been. Either three days of running in a row was too much, or the tempo workout did me in (or it could have been a combination of both).

Fridayoff
I knew my body needed a break after the previous day’s run.

Saturday off
Two rest days before the race tomorrow. It seems the more rest I have, the better I feel.

SundayRunFest 5K | race | 7:01 average pace
I felt (relatively) good during this race and was happy to take a minute off my time compared to when I ran this race 7 months pregnant with Cullen. There was a section of some strong headwinds, but that means it was also on our back for a while since it was an out-and-back course. You can read the full recap HERE. 4 miles total for the day with my warm-up.

Total for the week: 17 miles

Now that I’ve got things in my personal life and work load a little more under control, I’m getting back into the groove this week and hopefully I’ll be able to incorporate more runs into my week.

The weeks are going by fast, and before you know it, I will be running without a baby in my womb, which I am definitely excited for. I am not looking forward to the fact it will be winter by then, but I think getting back into running (and having a new baby) will distract me and keep me motivated to train hard. Hopefully, then, I can have a good comeback next summer!

Hi, I'm Michelle

I love running around the lakes of Minnesota, running after my two boys, and racing anything from the 5K to the marathon. I have been blogging here since 2010 when I ran my first marathon. I finally secured my sub-3 hour marathon after trying for 8 years.
