Alaskan Fashion

I was optimistic I would be able to do a fairly long run today but when my legs froze and then went numb after 3 miles, I knew that was out of the question. (I was hoping to be able to run about 10 miles.)

Shortly after 3 miles, I turned around and headed back home. There was no way I was going to be able to go much further.

My legs were bright red and numb when I got back. They looked like I had just finished an ice bath. I wonder if subjecting my legs to these cold temperatures could cause adverse long-term effects?

Distance: 7 miles

I don’t consider myself a fashionista, but I am always intrigued with the current fashion trends.

Here are some of the current fashion trends I have been seeing around Alaska—well just Anchorage.

Boggs

Most people swear by these -40* boots, so I bought a pair for Craig last Christmas because he has a hard time keeping his feet warm.

Maybe he is an exception, but they did not keep his feet warm—at all. I’ve had a couple other friends tell me they had the same problem. Despite their lack of warmth for some individuals, I hear they are a great rain boot.

Crocheted Headbands

I’m seeing these headbands pop up all over this winter. I think there may be a local business selling them??

UGGS

It seems as though UGGs have only recently come into style here. (It usually takes a while until the trends come up here.)

Skoop Down Skirt

I get it: it’s cute plus it help keep you warm. . . yet, I don’t get it. I think they look kind of weird. I don’t think I’ve seen too many people be able to pull them off.

Danskos

These have been a staple around here for a while and everyone has a pair.

XtraTufs

A waterproof insulated boot that is popular for fishing. . . or with a skirt apparently. (There is a very lose dress code here. 😉 )

I’m not sure how I ended up with four pairs of boots/shoes and only two other things. I guess we like our feet warm and dry!

Question

What is a current trend in your area?

Hi, I'm Michelle

I love running around the lakes of Minnesota, running after my two boys, and racing anything from the 5K to the marathon. I have been blogging here since 2010 when I ran my first marathon. I finally secured my sub-3 hour marathon after trying for 8 years.

Hahah, This is awesome Michelle! Before I came to AK this summer I definitely invested in a pair of Boggs, and saw SO MANY people wearing XtraTufs. My favorite was a girl in Talkeetna who was wearing her’s with black leggings and a CARHARTT jumper. Yup- a overall/skirt jumper. It actually was pretty awesome, and I have been looking for one ever since! 🙂

Oh, the people in Talkeetna. Maybe she made it herself?!?!

Most likely- I might have to talk my grandma into doing the same 🙂

Yep, that’s right, Mom. The biggest difference is that they are insulated. . . . and they cost a lot more.

I was wondering what was up with the Danskos, everyone is wearing them but they don’t look particularly warm!

People wear Danskos year-round here. They are *the* shoe to have! (I didn’t mean to imply that they are a winter-weather shoe.)

It seems every year Uggs are always in style around here, I just hate dropping that much cash for them…I would rather buy the knock offs. Skinny jeans, knee boots and lots of color is what people are wearing around me 🙂
