Maui: Our Excursions

Craig and I spent 9 days on the island of Maui and we were going to make the most of every day.

We definitely had our fair share of down time, but we also made sure to get out and explore the island every day as well.

DSC 0518

While we were there, we chose to go on three paid excursions:

- a snorkeling cruise

- surfing lessons

- zip lining

We spaced them out, so that we had something to look forward to throughout the week. With our free day inbetween those adventures, we drove around the island checking out other sights:

- a blowhole

- volcano (Haleakala)

- drove the road to Hana

It seems most logical (and easiest) to tell about our adventures in a chronological order, so that’s what I’ll do.

We flew into Maui and arrived Friday afternoon. Upon arrival, we immediately headed to Whole Foods. (We do not have a Whole Foods in Alaska, so I get pretty excited anytime I go in one.)

Yes, that’s a big smile planted on my face while grocery shopping.

DSC 0304

We, of course, had to partake in the hot and cold salad bar and eat outside. . . .absolute bliss.

As we were walking back to our car, Craig spotted this Minnesota license plate all the way in Hawaii!

DSC 0309

The next day, Saturday, we went to a beach for a while and then drove around the very west end of the island–Kaanapali to the Blowhole.

As we drove along the coast, I was surprised how quickly the landscape changed. Actually, the landscape changed a lot throughout the island–from picturesque beaches to rugged, desert-like topography and even some lush rainforest areas.

and narrow bridges.

DSC 0374

The blowhole: water spewing up through a hole in the rocks.

DSC 0390

It was super windy. . .I had to hold my shirt on. (Plus I was cold.)

DSC 0400

The next day, on Sunday, we drove up to the top of the volcano: Haleakala.

DSC 0467

At one point during our drive up, we could see both sides of the island.

DSC 0477

There were a lot of winding roads and hairpin turns to get to the top, but we eventually made it.

DSC 0488

As soon as we stepped out of the car, at the top of the volcano, I immediately exclaimed, “it feels like summer in Alaska.” I was not expecting 48* in Hawaii!

DSC 0497

We ended up hiking down into the volcano for a while.

DSC 0504

I wore my Chacos, which was a bad idea. I knew that going into it, but I didn’t want to get my new running shoes dusty. It was worth it.

DSC 0609

This is one of Craig’s favorite pictures.

Round-trip our hike took about 3 hours.

On Monday, we had our snorkeling cruise booked through Maui Adventure Cruises.

We were supposed to travel to another small island off the coast of Maui, but the winds were too strong to go there, so the crew came up with an alternative plan.

DSC 0632

I promise my husband is not “special.”

DSC 0633

We had a great time snorkeling. I could not believe how crystal clear the water was, and there were so many different types of tropical fish!

Unfortunately I did not get many pictures of us snorkeling; I was too paranoid I would drop the camera in the ocean.

DSC 0635

Part of our cruise also involved some whale watching.

DSC 0662

I know the whales seem really far away in the pictures, but the crew had to stay at least 100 yards away. They were still incredibly manificant to watch.

DSC 0651

Craig got SO burnt while we were out on the water. Like everyone said, you don’t feel like you are getting burnt because the water isn’t super warm and being out on the water always feels cooler. (I was actually cold.)

I sprayed him down with sunscreen before we set out, but you can see exactly where I sprayed it–the white squiggly lines–and the areas where the sunscreen just misted his back. :(

DSC 0002

Yes, it was as painful as it looks. He got second degree burns on one shoulder.

I’m so sorry, Honey!

Moral of the story: don’t use spray sunscreen or douse yourself in it!

DSC 0001

On Tuesday, we decided to drive the Road to Hana and travel around the east side of the island.

The east side of the island is filled with lush green forests due to a higher amount of rainfall.

DSC 0666

It was incredibly gorgeous, but the roads were very windy. (Craig was not a fan; I was okay.)

DSC 0669

There were many  waterfalls along the way.

I had picked out three stops along the way, but for various reasons, we didn’t stop at any of them, so we didn’t get to really see the waterfalls and pools close-up. I was pretty bummed. Oh well, I guess we’ll just have to go back again.

DSC 0675

We did stop at this pit stop to grab a bite to eat. It was pretty much in the middle of nowhere before Hana, but they had some decent food.

DSC 0686

Craig did not like the hairpin turns, so he had to buy some ginger ale to try and calm his stomach.

DSC 0684

We also bought this amazing coconut bread. It was to die for!

DSC 0685

After driving through Hana, we continued the rest of the way around the back side of the island.

This is acually the back side of Haleakala (the volcano). You can see where water has eroded the land away.

DSC 0689

We did make one stop at this Catholic church.

DSC 0692

They have services about three times a year–when there is a 5th Sunday in the month.

This is my hillbilly, “I’m from the country picture.” (I am actually from the country!)

We are going to submit this picture to Chevy to their marketing and advertising department with the slogan “Chevy Runs Deep” in the upper left-hand corner. This is the Cruze.

A sweet picture I couldn’t resist posting.

On Wednesday, we had our surfing lessons.

IMG 0278

We took surfing lessons through Goofy Foot Surf School, and we had an excellent experience. They provided rash guards (the long sleeve shirts), water shoes, and of course surf boards for us to use. I did not think I would even be able to stand up on the surf board, but I did! It wasn’t as hard as I thought it would be.

I wasn’t able to bring our camera out with us while we were surfing, so I just have these shots of us prior to going out.

On Friday, we had our final excursion: zip lining.

I didn’t get any pictures from zip ling because I was worried we would lose our camera, so I left it behind. In hindsight, it would have been safe in a zipped pocket.

Our zipling adventure was through Kapalua Adventures Zip Lines and once again we have nothing but positive things to say about our experience. The staff was great, we felt safe, and we had a blast!

That pretty much wraps up our big excursions during our trip. If you are planning a trip and have any more specific questions, I would be glad to help you out!

Whole Foods Love

There was no way I was going to pass up an opportunity to go to Whole Foods when I was near one while in Minnesota!

I have been craving a salad from Whole Foods since our day in Seattle!

I love being able to pick what I want and how much I want! I basically got a little bit of everything. :)

Craig and I shared a piece of Spinach Feta Pizza. It was super good–not overly cheesy (unlike my husband) and the crust was delicious!

Craig’s salad with his favorite dressing: blue cheese.

We also share a couple of containers of yogurt!

When I saw this container of pomegranate-flavored Chobani, I knew we couldn’t pass up an opportunity to try this flavor–seeing we don’t have this flavor in Alaska.

Out of all the flavors I’ve tried so far, this was definitely my favorite! (Although, I really want to try the pineapple flavor because I’ve heard great reviews about it.) Both Craig and I loved the pomegranate arils in the yogurt!

I was also excited when I saw Siggi’s Orange and Ginger-flavored yogurt! I had heard positive reviews about this flavor, so I was dying to try it. (Once again a flavor we don’t have in Alaska!)

Wow! What an awesome combination of flavors! Definitely a winner!

And finally Craig and I shared this kombucha to drink. All of the particles floated to the top because Craig shook the bottle–even though it says not to.

Workout

This morning I ran 5 miles outside. We are having some milder temperatures (for this time of the year), so it felt pretty “warm” (relatively speaking) at 27 degrees.

It was a good run overall–nothing to complain about so I’ll take that.

Moose count this morning: 2

Something Fun!

This year we will have the following dates: 1/1/11 . . . 1/11/11 . . . 11/1/11 . . . 11/11/11

Now try this that a fellow teacher told me about:

Take the last two digits of your birth year and add them to the age you will be this year.

Does it equal 111? It should!

Question

What is your favorite place to grab a salad or sandwich?

A Day in Seattle

Even though this is a recap of our trip to Sacramento, California, we actually spent the majority of Sunday (December 5) in Seattle, Washington!! :)

If you are just tuning in, be sure to read part I and part II of our trip.

Sunday morning got started bright and early with a 4:30 a.m. departure for the airport. After very little sleep all weekend long, I was exhausted, but I still had a fun day to look forward to!

With the way our travel plans worked, we ended up having an 8-hour layover in Seattle!! I was really excited because I’ve never been to Seattle, and I love visiting new places!! :D

Prior to our trip, we called our friends Ross and Jenn to see if they would meet us in Seattle and spend the day with us. They, of course, were happy to do so!! :)

We started our morning with a trip to the infamous Pike Place Market. We don’t have a very good farmer’s market in Anchorage, so I was beaming as I walked past all the fresh, home-grown produce. I was so giddy inside I could hardly contain myself! :)

And of course there was fish, but I’m bummed we didn’t get to see any of it being thrown.

Alaskan salmon–caught in my backyard practically.

Jenn and I did a little perusing at the local vendors.

I was so excited to buy home-grown produce from a farmer’s market!

The goods: 2 apples and some carrots. Of course we would have bought more if we weren’t traveling.

I had to know how these purple and white-ish colored carrots tasted!

The purple ones had a hint of beet and the white-ish ones had a hint of turnip in them.

I picked out two varieties I’ve never had before. This one was my favorite!!

We walked the streets and saw the first Starbucks.

We also saw a “team of pigs” pulling Santa’s sleigh (minus the sleigh). (That one’s for you, Mom and Dad!)

By this time, we were getting hungry, so we went to this convenience store to grab a little something.

Bread + cheese (You can’t go wrong with this combination. Craig and I lived on bread and cheese (plus some fruits and veggies) when we drove from Minnesota to Alaska!)

And some bacon-flavored chocolate?!?! While it seemed like a good (??) idea, it was actually quite disgusting!!

Next stop: the Pacific Science Center to see. . . .

the Harry Potter exhibit!!

Jenn, Ross, and Craig

We couldn’t take pictures inside, but the exhibit contained a variety of costumes and props from the movies. It was fun to see all the different things from the movies, and it made me realize how much work went into making the movies!

Next, it was time to get some food to fill our bellies.

We didn’t know exactly where we were going to eat, but when we decided on Whole Foods, I was more than happy!! (Once again, a store we don’t have in Alaska.)

There was so many different options to choose from, and after filling my plate, I realized I had missed an entire bar of food!!

Craig and I also split this kale and bean soup. It was good!

I also had a few bites of Craig’s sandwich. (I was a hungry girl!)

The sandwich contained: turkey, bacon, and avocado. It was also good!

Craig and I split a couple of beverages.

Craig loves kombucha (as do I), so he wanted to try this.

Plus, we have been to Townhend’s Tea Company in Portland, OR. We both really enjoyed this brand of kombucha!

Craig also loves rhubarb, so he wanted to try this beverage as well. It was a good choice!

After hanging out and catching up with our friends, it was then  time to go back to the airport. :(

Bummer! I wanted to stay!!
