Maui: The Beaches

Let’s be honest, the main reason I wanted to go to Maui (over any other island) was for the beaches.

I have never been to Mexico, the Caribbean, or anywhere tropical, so it was time to change that. Plus, sunshine, warm weather, beaches, and palm trees sounded very nice in the middle of an Alaskan winter. (One that made national news for being awfully cruel this year.)

DSC 0328

The first beach we went to was the infamous Kaanapali Beach. Three miles of gorgeous white sand beaches and crystal clear waters.

DSC 0347

We ate our lunch on the beach, spent time people-watching, and soaked up every minute. Actually this particular day there were some clouds in the sky misting us with rain showers. It was the tiniest amount of rain I’ve ever felt, but it was enough to chill me—especially when the clouds blocked the sun. (Go figure, me getting cold in Hawaii!)

DSC 0331

After sunning ourselves, we walked down the boardwalk that ran the entire length of the beach.

DSC 0341

Craig practicing his surfing form.

DSC 0346

Craig (my one-with-nature boy) was obsessed with taking pictures of the birds.

DSC 0338

The next time we spent time at the beach, we traveled a little further north to the Kapalua area.

DSC 0047

This was Napili Bay near Kapalua in Maui.

DSC 0048

A lot of kids had these boards that they rode on as the surf came up to the shore. It looked like fun.

DSC 0049

The classic foot picture. The OCD part of me wishes Craig’s feet were crossed in this picture.

DSC 0053

The beaches were pretty busy, but I didn’t mind. It was fun people-watching.

DSC 0055

I loved every minute!

DSC 0057

DSC 0066

I loved how clear the water was. We went snorkeling in this area and saw a lot of fish, turtles, and even a couple of eels.

DSC 0074

Off in the distance in the island of Molokai.

DSC 0078

So beautiful.

DSC 0079

We were actually able to walk to from Napili Bay to Kapalua Bay Beach on the walkway in-between the two beaches. This was nice because parking wasn’t always easy to come by in this area.

DSC 0080

We also went to Kihei the day we flew out, which is located in central Maui. While we were there, we went to the following beaches:

- Wailea Beach Park

- Kamaole Beach Park

(Sorry, no pictures.)

I tried to go to the beaches that have been ranked as some of the most beautiful beaches, and I think I succeeded. However, since Craig burnt his entire back the third day of our trip, we couldn’t go to the beach every day. I guess that means I’ll just have to go back to check out the ones I missed. Bummer. ;)

Maui: Resort and Food

During our trip to Maui, Craig and I stayed in Lahaina.

We loved staying in Lahaina and loved the resort we stayed on: Outrigger Aina Nalu.

I ended up booking our place through the website Vacation Rentals By Owner (www.verbo.com), and here’s the link to the exact place we stayed.

DSC 0315

We wanted to find a place with a full kitchen so that we could make some of our own meals in order to save money.

DSC 0319

It had a very nice, trendy kitchen with a full stove, microwave, refrigerator, plus a smaller dishwasher.

DSC 0316

The kitchen opened up into the living area with nice big windows.

DSC 0318

DSC 0317

Our bedroom had a king-sized bed, which felt huge compared to our queen at home. Craig felt miles away when were sleeping.

DSC 0311

With two TVs in the condo, Craig and I could watch our own shows—no compromising necessary—which was quite nice. Two TVs and cable; I definitely felt spoiled.

DSC 0314

The bathroom may have been my favorite room—as weird as that sounds. It was super modern, and I would love to have my own bathroom look like this some day.

DSC 0312

The awesome tile shower.

DSC 0313

The entire resort felt like you were in a rainforest. There were so many plants/trees/shrubs/flowers all around, and I loved it.

DSC 0457

There were two pools on site and one hot tub.

This was the chlorinated pool.

DSC 0454

And this was the salt water pool. That building in the back had the sweetest open-air deck/patio complete with tables and chairs, a kitchen area, bathrooms, and a TV with couches. I would love to have a set-up like that in my future home!

DSC 0458

Lahaina was definitely the place for night-life, shopping, and restauarnts. Not that other towns/areas didn’t offer those things, but it seemed as though many people staying in Kaanapali or Kapalua (or near-by areas) would drive to Lahaina in the evening for dining and shopping. We were fortunate in that Front Street was just a few blocks away, so we would walk down there every night.

DSC 0088

While we did have a kitchen in our condo, we also did choose to eat out quite a bit. We just couldn’t pass up on the opportunity to try new restaurants and different cuisine.

One of our favorite places was Aloha Mixed Plate.

DSC 0440

DSC 0450

Dining on the beach—it doesn’t get much better than that.

DSC 0442

Craig deep in thought about what to get.

DSC 0443

Just thought I’d point out Craig’s t-shirt says: “Get Smarter – NPR.” Craig is an NPR enthusiast, so I had the get the shirt for him.

DSC 0444

I had the Veggie Stir-fry with House-made Oyster Sauce. I added tofu, and it was to die for! It had an amazing taste that I’ve never had in stir-fry before.

DSC 0445

Craig also raved about his meal: the BBQ Mixed Plate with shoyu chicken, teriyaki beef, and kalbi rib.

DSC 0446

DSC 0449

One day we drove to Paia, which is often referred to a the hippy town on the island.

We chose to eat at the Paia Fish Market when we were there. We figured the crowds must mean it was good. Seating was a little hard to come by but everyone seemed to make it work.

DSC 0462

We definitely liked our food, but it wasn’t some of the best food we ate while in Maui.

We split a fish burger that was pretty good.

DSC 0461

We also split the fish tacos, which weren’t as good as some we had had a couple days prior.

Honestly, I would recommend the place to others, but we would try a few other places before we went back.

DSC 0460

One of the things on my list of things I wanted to do while in Hawaii was to dine on the beach while enjoying the sunset, and I’m glad to say I was able to do that!

DSC 0009

And having this guy there to enjoy it with me made it that much better.

DSC 0003

We ended up eating at Leilani’s On the Beach that evening. I was told their inside dining room has better food, but I wanted to eat at the beachside grill for the atmosphere and the fact the items on the menu were cheaper.

DSC 0004

I really liked my dish and it ranked up there as one of my favorite entrees during our trip.

Bangkok Beef & Buckwheat Noodle

DSC 0012

Craig had the Chicken Cashew Stir-fry. This was also good, but we both preferred my entree.

DSC 0013

For dessert we had the Messy Apple Crisp with macadamia nut ice cream. Delish!

DSC 0015

We had all of our breakfasts in our condo, except one. I was not going to miss out on breakfast at The Gazebo because I had heard so many great things about it.

DSC 0024

The line is *always* this long from what I’ve heard but most certainly worth it.

DSC 0021

I didn’t mind staring at this while we waited.

DSC 0022

DSC 0026

We had to wait about an hour, but I didn’t mind. I had the warmth of the sunshine, a beautiful view, and my best friend to chat with.

DSC 0030

DSC 0033

I couldn’t get over the beautiful views.

DSC 0042

Craig took this picture, which I thought was super cool. They are paddle boarding.

DSC 0043

The service was excellent; the staff was very friendly and patient even though there were a ton of people waiting to be seated.

Once again, Craig and I ended up splitting two entrees. I ordered the veggie omelet which was just okay.

DSC 0044

But these pancakes are where it’s at—and what everyone raves about.

Pancakes with banana, macadamia nuts, pineapple, a generous helping of whipped topping, and coconut syrup to top it off. Can you say sugar overload? One pancake each was more than enough!

DSC 0045

Another one of our favorite places was Choice Health Bar in Lahaina. If it wasn’t for Emily (from Daily Garnish) who discovered it on her vacation to Maui, I would not have known about it.

This raw/vegetarian/vegan restaurant open in April 2011, so it was still somewhat new, but it would be on my list of places to eat at again.

DSC 0086

I had the healthy lunch plate that came with a salad, soup, healthy grain (quiona), and a small dessert.

I am not a huge kale fan, but this salad was amazing! I have no idea what was in the dressing, but it was delicious.

DSC 0081

Craig had this vegetarian (probably vegan?) burger, which he said was the best vegetarian burger he’s ever had.

DSC 0082

We also split an acai bowl with strawberries, bananas, flax, and hemp granola.

DSC 0083

We ended up sitting up at the bar, and as the employees would make orders for other customers, they would pour the extras in a glass for us and let us have a sample.

DSC 0085

Those are the only places I took pictures at, but we also ate at:

Cool Cat Cafe

They are well-known for their burgers. I had one and loved it. (I am NOT a burger person.) We also had their fish tacos and they were definitely our favorite.

Kimo’s

Loved the atmosphere, didn’t love the food. We sat on the deck, which was right along the edge of the ocean, but we were not overly impressed with the food—especially for how much we paid! (This was by far our most expensive meal.)

Lahaina Pizza Company

Very good “deep dish” pizza. They call it deep dish, but Craig said it was not true deep dish—so maybe it was “deeper dish” pizza. I don’t know; I’ve never had true deep dish pizza. All I know is that it was good and so was the salad!

DSC 0091

Dining at Cool Cat Cafe—and my attempt at beach-hair. Try doing that with pin-straight hair.

DSC 0093

If you have any additional questions, please let me know. I would love to be of assistance. (I think I may have been a travel agent in another life.)

Maui: Our Excursions

Craig and I spent 9 days on the island of Maui and we were going to make the most of every day.

We definitely had our fair share of down time, but we also made sure to get out and explore the island every day as well.

DSC 0518

While we were there, we chose to go on three paid excursions:

- a snorkeling cruise

- surfing lessons

- zip lining

We spaced them out, so that we had something to look forward to throughout the week. With our free day inbetween those adventures, we drove around the island checking out other sights:

- a blowhole

- volcano (Haleakala)

- drove the road to Hana

It seems most logical (and easiest) to tell about our adventures in a chronological order, so that’s what I’ll do.

We flew into Maui and arrived Friday afternoon. Upon arrival, we immediately headed to Whole Foods. (We do not have a Whole Foods in Alaska, so I get pretty excited anytime I go in one.)

DSC 0300

Yes, that’s a big smile planted on my face while grocery shopping.

DSC 0304

We, of course, had to partake in the hot and cold salad bar and eat outside. . . .absolute bliss.

DSC 0297

As we were walking back to our car, Craig spotted this Minnesota license plate all the way in Hawaii!

DSC 0309

The next day, Saturday, we went to a beach for a while and then drove around the very west end of the island–Kaanapali to the Blowhole.

As we drove along the coast, I was surprised how quickly the landscape changed. Actually, the landscape changed a lot throughout the island–from picturesque beaches to rugged, desert-like topography and even some lush rainforest areas.

DSC 0402

Lots of winding roads

DSC 0363

and narrow bridges.

DSC 0374

The blowhole: water spewing up through a hole in the rocks.

DSC 0390

It was super windy. . .I had to hold my shirt on. (Plus I was cold.)

DSC 0400

The next day, on Sunday, we drove up to the top of the volcano: Haleakala.

DSC 0467

At one point during our drive up, we could see both sides of the island.

DSC 0477

There were a lot of winding roads and hairpin turns to get to the top, but we eventually made it.

DSC 0488

As soon as we stepped out of the car, at the top of the volcano, I immediately exclaimed, “it feels like summer in Alaska.” I was not expecting 48* in Hawaii!

DSC 0610

DSC 0497

We ended up hiking down into the volcano for a while.

DSC 0504

I wore my Chacos, which was a bad idea. I knew that going into it, but I didn’t want to get my new running shoes dusty. It was worth it.

DSC 0609

This is one of Craig’s favorite pictures.

DSC 0512

DSC 0566

Round-trip our hike took about 3 hours.

On Monday, we had our snorkeling cruise booked through Maui Adventure Cruises.

We were supposed to travel to another small island off the coast of Maui, but the winds were too strong to go there, so the crew came up with an alternative plan.

DSC 0632

I promise my husband is not “special.”

DSC 0633

We had a great time snorkeling. I could not believe how crystal clear the water was, and there were so many different types of tropical fish!

Unfortunately I did not get many pictures of us snorkeling; I was too paranoid I would drop the camera in the ocean.

DSC 0635

Part of our cruise also involved some whale watching.

DSC 0662

I know the whales seem really far away in the pictures, but the crew had to stay at least 100 yards away. They were still incredibly manificant to watch.

DSC 0651

Craig got SO burnt while we were out on the water. Like everyone said, you don’t feel like you are getting burnt because the water isn’t super warm and being out on the water always feels cooler. (I was actually cold.)

I sprayed him down with sunscreen before we set out, but you can see exactly where I sprayed it–the white squiggly lines–and the areas where the sunscreen just misted his back. :(

DSC 0002

Yes, it was as painful as it looks. He got second degree burns on one shoulder.

I’m so sorry, Honey!

Moral of the story: don’t use spray sunscreen or douse yourself in it!

DSC 0001

On Tuesday, we decided to drive the Road to Hana and travel around the east side of the island.

The east side of the island is filled with lush green forests due to a higher amount of rainfall.

DSC 0666

It was incredibly gorgeous, but the roads were very windy. (Craig was not a fan; I was okay.)

DSC 0669

There were many  waterfalls along the way.

I had picked out three stops along the way, but for various reasons, we didn’t stop at any of them, so we didn’t get to really see the waterfalls and pools close-up. I was pretty bummed. Oh well, I guess we’ll just have to go back again.

DSC 0675

We did stop at this pit stop to grab a bite to eat. It was pretty much in the middle of nowhere before Hana, but they had some decent food.

DSC 0686

Craig did not like the hairpin turns, so he had to buy some ginger ale to try and calm his stomach.

DSC 0684

We also bought this amazing coconut bread. It was to die for!

DSC 0685

After driving through Hana, we continued the rest of the way around the back side of the island.

This is acually the back side of Haleakala (the volcano). You can see where water has eroded the land away.

DSC 0689

We did make one stop at this Catholic church.

DSC 0692

They have services about three times a year–when there is a 5th Sunday in the month.

DSC 0693

This is my hillbilly, “I’m from the country picture.” (I am actually from the country!)

DSC 0713

Part of the tretchurous road we drove.

DSC 0717

The rugged coastline.

DSC 0739

We are going to submit this picture to Chevy to their marketing and advertising department with the slogan “Chevy Runs Deep” in the upper left-hand corner. This is the Cruze.

DSC 0741

A sweet picture I couldn’t resist posting.

DSC 0743

A cave/tunnel we saw along the coast.

DSC 0744

On Wednesday, we had our surfing lessons.

IMG 0278

We took surfing lessons through Goofy Foot Surf School, and we had an excellent experience. They provided rash guards (the long sleeve shirts), water shoes, and of course surf boards for us to use. I did not think I would even be able to stand up on the surf board, but I did! It wasn’t as hard as I thought it would be.

I wasn’t able to bring our camera out with us while we were surfing, so I just have these shots of us prior to going out.

IMG 0273

Craig making sure to spray himself down with lots of sunscreen.

IMG 0275

On Friday, we had our final excursion: zip lining.

I didn’t get any pictures from zip ling because I was worried we would lose our camera, so I left it behind. In hindsight, it would have been safe in a zipped pocket.

Our zipling adventure was through Kapalua Adventures Zip Lines and once again we have nothing but positive things to say about our experience. The staff was great, we felt safe, and we had a blast!

That pretty much wraps up our big excursions during our trip. If you are planning a trip and have any more specific questions, I would be glad to help you out!
