I have mixed feelings about my 10k last Saturday–the Trent Waldron 10K, but as time goes on, I am focusing on the positive things rather than the things the overachiever in me is bummed about.
The good:
– I ran a 44 second PR!
– I didn’t start out too fast.
– I ran some pretty even splits considering the course was slightly uphill on the way out and slightly downhill on the way back.
– I think my incontinence from having Bjorn 20 months ago is finally better (i.e. no pee leakage).
– I stayed mentally strong the whole way.
Trent Waldron 10K
Time – 39:11
Average pace – 6:18
Women’s place – 3rd
Age-graded time – 38:21
For this race, they adjust our times based off our age to ‘make the playing field more equal.’ It is kind of like a golfer’s handicap, but this is strictly based off your time and current age rather than recent historical performance. It is kind of fun and different, and it makes me feel better than I would be faster if it wasn’t for my old age. Ha!
*My ‘gun time’ is my age-graded time.
This really was a really solid race for me. I had hopes of running a sub-39, but I was so close. Now I have something to go after next time, right?! I also have to remind myself I have not done any 10k-specific training–all of my training has been marathon-focused. Plus, my coach said it is hard to run a good 10k without the 10k-specific work, so that made me feel better.
Splits:
Mile 1 – 6:23
Mile 2 – 6:24
Mile 3 – 6:26
Mile 4 – 6:16
Mile 5 – 6:13
Mile 6 – 6:13
Mile 0.21 – 5:37 min/mi pace
I ran by myself the entire race pretty much–passing just a couple people during the first couple of miles. I did have my friend and the second place woman, Mandy, in front of me and within eyesight most of the race. She went out a little faster than I thought I was capable of, but I did my best to keep her within my eyesight most of the race. I started to catch her towards the last mile, but I didn’t have enough in me to actually catch her.
My next race is Friday night–the Twilight 12K, which is a premier race here in Anchorage. It always brings the best of the best, so I am hoping for a solid race and another PR. My current PR from the Twilight 12K was set 7 months after having Cullen six years ago, so it is time to put that one to rest too!
Congratulations on your PR! I get it… it’s hard to come so close to your goal time and miss it by 11 seconds. Still, a great race for you! Good luck on Friday.
Thank you!
