Our Thanksgiving Weekend + Turkey Trot Race Recap

Phew! That was incredibly busy extended weekend, and I am just now getting around to recapping it all.

Thursday morning, Craig and I ran the Turkey Trot here in town. We dropped Cullen off at Grandma and Grandpa’s and went downtown for the 4th annual Turkey Trot. There were over 2000 people who ran the race, which makes it the largest timed 5K in the state. (I believe I got that right!)

The day before the race, the snow had nearly all melted and the pavement was clear, which meant I would actually be able to race. But come race morning, a thin layer of ice formed and made the roads incredibly slick. Even with my studded shoes, there was no way I would be able to race it. I was super bummed because I am in the best shape of my life, so I should have had no problem PRing.

I did the best I could, but I just couldn’t get my legs to move any faster on the slippery portions of the course, which encompassed about 80-85% of it. I was able to pick up my pace more towards the end and pass a few people, but this race definitely did not showcase what I am capable of.

My splits

Mile 1 – 7:01

Mile 2 – 6:49

Mile 3 – 6:26

At least I can’t blame myself for lack of training or something of that nature–this was completely out of my control. It was fun finishing inside on a red carpet though!

After I was done, I ran to find Craig and run with him to the finish. After the race, we chatted with some people we knew, and then I ran 6 miles back home before going to Thanksgiving at my in-laws.

We had a nice meal with just seven of us there, which was actually quite nice.

Friday morning I didn’t plan on going Black Friday shopping, but it worked out that I hit up Target for some things. I actually didn’t get any Black Friday deals but rather just some essentials.

Later on that morning, I went for a run, got ready, and then Craig and I went out for lunch at South Restaurant. This was the third time we’ve been there this month, which is so unlike us! We rarely go out-to-eat, and to go to the same restaurant three times in a row is even more rare. I had a breakfast sandwich; Craig had the fish and chips.

Friday afternoon I met up with a friend at the new Steam Dot downtown connected to Williwaw. I had tea since I had coffee that morning. We had fun chatting and catching up.

Saturday I worked all day at Skinny Raven, and it was crazy busy for Small Business Saturday. I am so glad people are supporting their local businesses!

And Sunday was my day off of running, church in the morning, and then I spent the rest of the day catching up on computer work and cleaning the house.

So there you have it! My extended holiday weekend in a nutshell. I hope you enjoyed your time with family and/or friends and remembering all that you’re thankful for.

Hi, I'm Michelle

I love running around the lakes of Minnesota, running after my two boys, and racing anything from the 5K to the marathon. I have been blogging here since 2010 when I ran my first marathon. I finally secured my sub-3 hour marathon after trying for 8 years.
