Midnight Sun

This morning I completed my first “long” run since the marathon two weeks ago.

Distance: 9 miles

Time: 1:12

Route: neighborhoods, paved roads, hills during middle 1/3

Weather: 52*, sunny, no wind

It was a good run for me. I really wanted to keep my pace around 8 minutes per mile and my average ended up being exactly 8:00. I know my pace could have been faster without the hills, but I also know the hills are good for me.

When I started out, I had some difficulties breathing. It wasn’t that I’m-out-of-shape feeling but more like I was running at altitude. Anchorage is pretty much at sea level, so I knew that couldn’t be it. The only thing I could think of was that there are a lot of flowering trees/plants right now and the pollen count might be really high?? I’m not sure, but I did feel better during the last third of my run, and during that time, I didn’t see any flowers in the area. Or maybe it is all in my head.

After I refueled with a spinach smoothie.

In the mix: Trader Joe’s soy milk (I stocked up on things from Trader Joe’s when I was in MN and brought a bunch of food back.), 1/2 frozen banana, Vega protein powder, and lots of spinach of course

Friday night Craig and I had a date night, and we decided to go on a bike ride.

Our destination: Bears Tooth Theater to watch The Hunger Games.

What’s unique about this theater is that there are tables and you are able to order food to eat during the movie.

You order your food prior to going into the theater and then you take this bright orange cone with you so the waiters can find you and deliver your food.

It is pretty fun. Plus, the movies are only $3.50 a person, which you can’t beat. This is often recommended as a stop for tourists.

As usual, Craig and I ordered two different entrees and split each one.

I ordered the Ranch Salad. Pretty basic salad with romaine lettuce, bacon, cheese, cucumbers, and tomatoes, but it was delicious.

Craig ordered the Mushu Wrap, which is fantastic! It had tofu, mushrooms, and a peanut sauce in it (along with a bunch of other things), which maybe doesn’t sound all that special, but Craig was still talking about it today. I’ve had it before, and it is definitely one of my favorite things on the menu.

I really enjoyed the movie. I’ve read the first few chapters of the first book, so I had an understanding what was going on, which was helpful. I would definitely recommend the movie; it is one of the better movies I’ve seen this year.

After the movie, it was time to bike back home. No need to worry about biking in the dark in the land of the Midnight Sun!

Craig having fun with the camera.

After spending 3 weeks in Minnesota, even I forgot how light it is here in the summer!

Just for comparison, I had Craig take my picture before we left at 6 p.m.

And then again at 11 p.m. when we returned home! (And there was no editing done to this picture; it really is that light!)

(Haha! Apparently I needed my sunglasses more at 11 p.m. than I did at 6 p.m.)

Today’s sunrise/sunset times:

Sunrise 4:29 a.m.

Sunset: 11:39 p.m.

Alright, even though it looks like 6 p.m. outside right now, it is time for me to hit the hay.

Goodbye, Minnesota

Today I am heading back to Alaska after a 3-week vacation, first in North Carolina and then in Minnesota. I have thoroughly enjoyed every minute and don’t want to leave!

DSC_0048

My time in Minnesota has been filled with seeing friends, spending time with family, and sunshine and warm weather! Let’s recap. . .

One of the first things I did was run Grandma’s Marathon (Duluth, MN) where I crushed my PR by 15 minutes and qualified for Boston!!

DSC_0227

Then there was a lot of quality family time.

DSC_0333

One of my family’s favorite things to do is go fishing.

My mom fishing and watching the bobber very closely!

DSC_0344

My brother could be out there for hours!

DSC_0345

Craig even did some fishing. These fish are teeny tiny compared to the ones he catches in Alaska!

DSC_0347

A lot of good, quality time was spent with friends as well.

Jenn just had her baby yesterday! Congrats!!

One morning I got back to my farm-girl roots and attend the Steele County Breakfast-On-the-Farm event sponsored by Steele County Dairy Farmers.

DSC_0025

This is a community-wide event held on a family’s farm each year.

DSC_0033

DSC_0034

People come to support the dairy farmers in the county and learn about farming.

DSC_0030

It was a very family-friendly event with a bounce house for the kids, arts and crafts projects, pictures with a calf, and a petting zoo.

DSC_0027

There was also a pancake breakfast.

DSC_0011

The breakfast was $3 for all-you-can eat pancakes, sausages, cheese, and orange juice.

DSC_0012

Then it was time to visit the cows.

DSC_0019

She really liked me and tried to eat my hair.

DSC_0020

Bonus points to anyone who can identify the breed of this cow.

DSC_0021

We walked around the farm and saw where the calves stay.DSC_0024

And then we saw some elephants. . . . .

DSC_0038

just kidding. These guys weren’t on the farm. They were at an arena getting ready for a circus.

We had to park in town and then take a bus out to the farm, and when we got back from our farm tour, these elephants were near the parking lot, getting ready for their show.

DSC_0036

I also made sure to do a lot of shopping while in Minnesota.

I stocked up on some Trader Joe’s products and Lululemon sucked me in pretty bad as well.

DSC_0040

And then of course, I had to do some running in warm/hot weather while I was here.

The first week after running the marathon, I laid low and let my body heal. I did a couple walk/run “runs” but that was about it.

But this week I have been feeling quite good and am starting to log the miles again.

DSC_0044

Kristy (my sister) and I have been doing a lot of runs together.

DSC_0060

Kristy is my clone and some how we ALWAYS managed to wear similar outfits even if we had no idea what the other person was wearing.

DSC_0050

Both wearing striped V-neck tops. It was quite frustrating.

DSC_0049

So, that’s that. I did a TON more things but got lazy and didn’t take many pictures. Oh well, I had so much fun and am glad I was able to spend so much time in Minnesota.

Grandma’s Marathon 2012–Race Recap

The third time was a charm!

I have been trying to qualify for the Boston Marathon since my first marathon (Grandma’s Marathon in 2010) but missed qualifying by 2 minutes that year. Then I tried to qualify last year but ran even slower with a time of 3:44 (Mayor’s Marathon in 2011). I was bummed, so I picked an advanced training plan, trained really hard this spring, and it paid off!

Pic

My previous PR (personal record) was 3:42:12, which means I cut 15+ minutes off my PR!!

I am ecstatic about this! I’m so pumped the marathon went well, and I can’t wait to see my future potential.

Backing up to Friday. . . .

Craig and I checked out the race expo, picked up my bib, and picked up as many free things as possible.

We also stopped by the Minnesota Pork Producers booth to see my mom promoting pork! (My mom’s in the yellow t-shirt.)

DSC_0149

They were handing out pork samples, meat thermometers, recipes, and cutting boards.

Craig with our cutting board.

DSC_0147

After the expo, Craig and I took a walk along the water: Lake Superior.

DSC_0152DSC_0153

I love being near water—it doesn’t matter if it is a lake, the ocean, a waterfall, etc., I love it all.

DSC_0156

Craig and I

DSC_0158

A nice Minnesotan offered to take our picture after they saw us attempting to take one ourselves.

DSC_0160

Of course Craig had to wreck my picture. Ha!

DSC_0161

There, that’s better.

DSC_0162

After our walk, it was time to get some food.

Last time I ran Grandma’s Marathon (two years ago), my mom and I discovered this cute little café in Duluth, and as soon as I knew I was running Grandma’s this year, I had planned on eating dinner the night before the marathon at Amazing Grace Bakery and Café.

DSC_0165

I ordered pretty much the same thing I did last time: half of a turkey sandwich with cheese, tomato, lettuce, onion, sprouts, mayo, and Dijon mustard. The sandwich was huge for a half of a sandwich. (The picture makes it look deceptively small.)

DSC_0164

The evening was too picture-perfect not to spend some more time outside, so we did a little more walking around the water front area.

DSC_0166DSC_0168DSC_0169DSC_0171

I love Duluth.

But soon it was time to get off my feet and get some rest before the marathon.

When we got back to the hotel, I laid out my things for the next morning and watched a little TV before hitting the hay. I, of course, didn’t sleep well, but I wasn’t worried because I felt ready to go the next morning.

DSC_0178

Since it was a point-to-point course, I had to catch the bus before 6 a.m. to be transported to the start area.

At 7:45 a.m. it was time to go!!

DSC_0186

As with everyone, I was super conscientious about not going out too fast at the beginning. I was constantly checking my Garmin to make sure I was staying within my targeted pace.

I knew I needed to average 8:12 minutes/mile in order to run 3:35, which would qualify me for Boston. Yet at the same time, I was pretty confident I could maintain a pace under 8:00 minutes/mile, so after using the first mile to warm-up, I settled into a nice 7:40 minutes/mile pace.

Mile 1 – 7:54

Mile 2 – 7:40

Mile 3 – 7:38

Mile 4 – 7:42

DSC_0193

I did a nice job of maintaining that pace for the first 8 miles.

Mile 5 – 7:43

Mile 6 – 7:37

Mile 7 – 7:42 –> took energy gel #1

Mile 8 – 7:42

DSC_0211

At this point, I started to feel the affects of the marathon, which scared me because it was definitely too early to be getting tired.

It didn’t help that I desperately had to use the bathroom: the coffee/caffeine went right through me, and I really had to go #2, so I sought out the nearest port-a-potty and got it out of my system. I felt ten times better after that!

Mile 9 – 7:50

Mile 10 – 8:24 –> this is when I had to use the bathroom

DSC_0225

Luckily my time didn’t drop off too much after that, but it wasn’t quite as effortless as it was at the beginning.

Mile 11 – 7:49

Mile 12 – 7:48 –> gel #2

Mile 13 – 7:45

Mile 14 – 7:47

DSC_0227

I came through the half-way point at 1:42, which made me pretty confident I would be able to qualify for Boston. But if something unexpected did happen, I would have a few minutes to spare.

The next few miles started to get tough, but I still hung on and made it my goal not to let me pace drop below 8 minute miles.

Mile 15 – 7:53

Mile 16 – 7:53

Mile 17 – 7:54

Mile 18 – 8:00 –> gel #3

DSC_0228

I put my sister in charge of meeting me at various points to give me my energy gel packets and water. It was so nice I didn’t have to worry about carrying these myself.

I like this picture with my sister running with me and my parents in the background (on the right) cheering for me.

DSC_0258

Once we got to mile 19, we were into the city of Duluth and there were tons of people cheering! It helped so much because it took my mind off the pain!!

These last few miles were tough, but I pushed through and stayed focused on my goal.

Mile 19 – 7:43

Mile 20 – 8:13

Mile 21 – 7:58

Mile 22 – 8:02 –> gel #4

Mile 23 – 7:59 –> Lemon Drop Hill had nothing on me!

DSC_0276

I rarely use mantras when I race, but for some reason, these two phrases were repeating through my head druing the race:

“You are strong.”

and

“You have trained harder than 90% of these people.”

Mile 24 – 7:58

Mile 25 – 8:02

Mile 26 – 7:41

I kept giving it everything I had until I crossed the finish line.

DSC_0304

Woohoo!! So tired yet so happy with my performance!

DSC_0308

I was also super happy that Craig was there to see me run!

DSC_0311

I also loved having my family there to cheer me on!

Kristy (my sister), me, and my mom

DSC_0312

Kristy, my mom, my dad, me, and Craig

DSC_0314

What a great day!! I can’t wait for the next marathon—even if I was thinking, “maybe I should just stick to the half-marathon” at about mile 23 of the race. Ha! Gotta love the addiction!
