2011 Highlights

2011 definitely had its challenges, but I am thankful for my health, my family, and my husband! :D

My year got started out on a sad note with the passing of my grandmother in January. Craig and I flew back to Minnesota for her funeral. It was nice to be able to see my family, but of course not under those particular circumstances. I did get to run with my sister in -20* weather though!

I celebrated my birthday (one day early) in March with a pair of new running shoes.

I revealed my dilemma about living in Alaska and many of you weighed in.

We discovered Yogurtland in the Anchorage Airport.

May brought the end of the school year (hallelujah!) where I confessed how much teaching stresses me out and thankfully summer break began.

We celebrated our third wedding anniversary with dinner out—nothing too fancy. (I’m so glad Craig gets a “real” haircut at a “real” salon now!)

I ran my second marathon (Mayor’s Marathon) in Anchorage in a time of 3:44. I ran the entire way (which was one of my goals) but did not break my PR, which still stands at 3:42.

In June, I traveled to Minnesota to see my family, friends, and soak up the sun and heat!! (Never though I’d say that!)

My sister and I post-run in the heat! :)

In July, my aunt came to visit for two weeks and we traveled all over the state of Alaska—with the higlight being camping in Denali National Park and Preserve.

The rest of summer was filled with camping, hiking, and biking.

August brought the beginning of a new school year that I thought I wouldn’t be returning to, but I did.

I attempted to PR in the Skinny Raven Half-Marathon but came up short again.

The fall semester was insanely busy with work, working out, taking two classes (to renew my state teaching license), and blogging took a back burner.

Craig and I did run the Kenai River Marathon Relay (with 2 other people).

The beginning of November was Craig’s birthday, but I was a bad blogger and did not get any pictures.

For Thanksgiving, I flew down to Raleigh, North Carolina to visit my sister and surprise my parents who also came down to visit her.

Here’s to hoping for a successful and happy 2012!

Friday’s Happenings

I took today off from running. I’ve been pretty sore this week from lifting weights and doing yoga, so I went to the gym and did the elliptical instead for 30 minutes.

After about 22 minutes my left foot started to go numb. This isn’t the first time it has happened; it happens anytime I go on the elliptical. Does this happen to anyone else?

Yesterday I did run 4 miles and saw 3 moose. They were cute and everything but in my way. I had to pick a different route to get home—slightly annoying.

After a shower a quick breakfast this morning, it was off to get my hair cut at Salon Ivy in downtown Anchorage. Salon Ivy had a Groupon a while back that I cashed in today.

I just ended up getting a trim, but I was very impressed with the quality of customer service. The owner, Brian, was very friendly and welcoming. (I often think the owner is going to be stuck-up or snooty—especially for a new client.) He did a deep condition on my hair that left it feeling extremely soft. (I guess my hair was really dry. Why can’t I ever tell these things?)

Sharin then cut my hair and evened out my uneven layers and now everything feels healthy again. Yeah!

I wasn’t crazy with how she styled my hair but that is easy to fix. (She curled it with a flat iron.)

I had some time to kill so I went to Habitat Housewares in the University Mall and thought about getting this pig grill for my parents.

For those of you who know my parents, they are actually “retiring” from the hog business and will soon have no more pigs on their farm—as of this spring. It makes Craig sad because he won’t be able to enjoy any more of their bacon or make his bacon pancakes. They will still farm corn and soybeans.

Then it was time to meet Craig for lunch at Moose’s Tooth.

Moose’s Tooth and Bear’s Tooth are sister restaurants in town and are very popular for the locals and highly recommended to anyone who comes to visit. Craig and I often go to Bear Tooth because it is closer to where we live and seems less busy than Moose’s Tooth, but we only had to wait a few minutes for a table today!

IMG_0943

I got the lunch special: a salad + a (giant) slice of pizza for $7.95. That’s a pretty good bargain for Anchorage.

Craig got two pieces of pizza and a salad.

After we got done eating, Craig had to go back to work. I didn’t have any other commitments—and I was freezing, so I stopped at Starbucks (something I rarely do) and ordered a misto in hopes of warming myself up. Not only it is really cold here today (7*), but I always get really cold after I eat. I swear all of the (little) blood that was circulating through my body, goes straight to my stomach for digestion which left me shivering by the end of the meal today.

IMG_0951

I ordered a tall decaf cafe misto with gingerbread flavoring. I told the guy 2 (of 3) pumps of gingerbread, but I think the gal put 3 in, but it wasn’t too sweet for me. Usually lattes are too sweet for me but this was just right.

IMG_0962

It took many outtakes to get a decent picture of myself, and after a while this is what I felt like.

IMG_0964

After getting frustrated with the camera and photographer, I just ended up making silly faces since none of the nice faces were turning out. (Um, yes, I notoriously leave that cupboard door open.)

IMG_0965

And here’s a picture of some snow if any of you are missing snow this winter/Christmas/holiday season. I will gladly give you some of ours! You can also have a side of 3:30 p.m. sunset. :-?

Hope you have a splendid last day of 2011 tomorrow!

Goals for 2012

I decided to switch this up this morning and run at The Dome this morning.

IMG_0932

The Dome is an indoor sports facility with turf soccer fields and a 400+ meter indoor track. They claim it is 400 meters, but it is actually more than 400 meters. I used to be an official at track and field meets, and the 1600 meter run did not start and finish at the same place.

Anyway, it is a nice indoor facility for running. It is actually really close to where we live, but I just wish it didn’t cost so much to get in. Although, it is cheaper than going to most yoga classes.

IMG_0927

Today I actually had a free pass to use that I’ve been hanging onto for about 3 years now (no joke). Running from the front door of my apartment is much more convenient than driving somewhere to run, so I’ve just never taken the time to use the pass.

IMG_0926

Yeah for being able to wear ONE long sleeve top and capris!

IMG_0924

Of course I arrived in the dark and completed my entire workout before the sun had rose. But that’s not too hard when the sun rises after 10 a.m.

IMG_0933

Workout

1.5 miles warm-up

2 x 1600 meters (basically mile repeats—at about 7:30 minutes/mile pace)

1.5 miles cool-down

Total: 5 miles

Time: 40 minutes

IMG_0928

It was so nice to be able to run fast today—and not worry about slipping and falling! Although it still isn’t as fun as running outside.

Goals for 2012

I love setting goals and pushing myself to try new things.

However, the hard thing about setting goals so far out is that I never know how things will actually turn out. But as of right now, these are my goals for the upcoming year:

- Run 2 marathons.

- I would love to break my PR in the marathon and/or half-marathon.

- Do 3 unassisted pull-ups.

- Travel to somewhere new. (Is this cheating since we already purchased tickets to Maui?)

- Move. (even if it is just to a different place in Anchorage)

- Try skate-skiing.

- Read a book each month. (I hope I am not overcommitting myself with this goal.)
