The Crazy Things Runners Do

Yipee! I’m so glad tomorrow is Friday!! πŸ˜€

Thankfully this week went by pretty fast. Why can’t every work-week be only 4 days?!?!

Like usual, my day started with an early morning run. It was scary-dark out there this morning! (Picture taken after my run was done.)

Distance: 4 miles

Time: ?? – not sure, my watch broke and I haven’t replaced it yet.

Weather: 55* (Lately it has only been 50* in the mornings, so the extra 5* of warmth was nice.)

I took it easy and enjoyed the run. Although, it was pitch-dark out there which was a little scary. I have to get used to running in the dark for the next 6 months again. πŸ™

And speaking of running. . . .

Runners: we all know they’re a little crazy. πŸ˜‰

This morning I was thinking about some of the crazy things I’ve done as a runner. I don’t think my list is all that insane.

Some of the craziest things I’ve done as a runner:

– ran in -40* weather.

– ran in (potentially) dangerous weather: lighting, hail, downpours, and blizzards.

– peed my pants during a race (in high school and college).

– ran 26.2 miles without stopping.

– ran before 4 a.m. in the morning.

– continued to run after being bitten by a dog.

– got heat exhaustion from running.

– scared a moose so much he slipped on the ice and fell down.

Question

What is the craziest thing you have done while out on a run?

Hi, I'm Michelle

I love running around the lakes of Minnesota, running after my two boys, and racing anything from the 5K to the marathon. I have been blogging here since 2010 when I ran my first marathon. I finally secured my sub-3 hour marathon after trying for 8 years.

I have not done anything crazy during a run… yet. Something to aim for in the future? πŸ˜‰ I am proud to say it is 8:37AM Eastern Time and my 9 mile run for the week is DONE!

I continued running because I was in too much shock and too scared to go and confront the owner. I ended up just running 1.5 miles back home.

I’ve done a lot of crazy things as a rower, but not as a runner:
-continuing to row despite “grazing” my hands so hard against the boat that skin came off
    – getting a bloody nose in the middle of practice, waiting 5 minutes for it to stop, and then getting right back into it to battle for my seat
    – rowing while it was snowing (and getting splashed! brr!)
    – racing the national championships three days after a hospital quality bout with food poisoning
    – flying to England to dual race against girls who were 6-8 inches taller than us, and 50-75 pounds heavier
    – woken up every morning at 4:50 for an entire year, just to row in six 8-minute races

I’m sure there’s more, but I think most athletes are insane at some level. It’s just love!

Hahaha! Your list of crazy things made me laugh out loud!

These days I’m boring and run inside my house on a treadmill, so I haven’t had any run-ins with wild animals or blizzards or anything like that.

However, the privacy lends itself to its own form of craziness–namely, my tendency to “dance” and sing to my music while I run. I couldn’t get away with that in the street. 8)

I love these crazy runner stories. Is it crazy to say that hearing them is inspiring? I guess makes me feel like i’m not the only one. I have taken a faceplant far too many times and gotten up to continue running. I’ve run at 4 am, I’ve done a 30 mile run in honor of a friend’s birthday. Recently woke up at 5 am to get a 12 mile run over with on a workday morning and since it was so dark ran the first 6 miles around my apt complex (12 laps, it was a little maddening!) I am now hooked on marathons and am running my 3rd one in 3 weeks (Marine Corps!).

Craziest thing running was running through a rural part of town and coming upon a black bear about 20 feet from me. Of course, it startled me, so I yelled, ahhhhhh, well that just alerted him that I was there. I continued to run as it followed (not chased) just followed me down the road. I held my hands up and yelled, but it wasn’t bothered by that. Thankfully a vehicle came by, I used it as a “pick” and then ran home, albeit a wee bit faster than I had planned.

Oh my! What a story. I’ve heard how black bears will sometimes attack while other times they can be quite docile–you just never know!
